The first day of his visit was dedicated to visiting some of the Slovenian institutions in the city of Cleveland, Ohio: the Slovenian National Home on St. Klara Street, the Slovenian Museum and Archive, the Slovenian Reading Room, the Genealogical Society, and the National Museum of the Cleveland Regiment.

The United States of America became a second home for many Slovenians already in the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century. It was Cleveland, then a rapidly developing industrial city, that soon became one of the largest centres of the Slovenian diaspora. In order to preserve a piece of their homeland, Slovenian customs, songs and words even far away from their birthplace, the Slovenians here founded their homes, churches, resorts, choirs, folklore groups and many other things. Slovenian communities can also be found in other parts of the country. According to estimates, around 300,000 compatriots with Slovenian roots live in the USA today.
